What is Play Therapy?
Play Therapy is a gentle, child-centered approach, that facilitates an opportunity for children to express their feelings and process emotions and experiences in a natural, accessible way. Additionally, it is an approach that is developmentally appropriate for them. As adults, we often use words to convey our experiences and emotions; for children, it is most intuitive for them to communicate through play using symbolism. Play therapy is especially helpful for children dealing with trauma, anxiety, grief, behavioral issues, developmental regression and changes in family dynamics. It helps them develop emotional awareness and coping skills to navigate life with confidence.
What ages is Play Therapy most appropriate for?
For children ages 3-12, play therapy is one of the most appropriate forms of counseling.
How often should I expect sessions to occur?
Working with children looks different for each family. Often times, children begin coming to sessions weekly or bi-weekly, and then reduce frequency as their goals are met. Although, each client has an individualized plan based on the client and family’s needs. Standard sessions are 45 minutes long.
What is my role as a parent/caregiver to a child receiving Play Therapy services?
As a parent/caregiver, you are an integral part in their healing journey. Parent collaboration is strongly encouraged — this is accomplished through parent/caregiver consults. During this time, the parent/caregiver gets time to do things like ask questions, talk through any new information and learn skills for at home! Prior to any session involving a child, the counselor will meet with the parent/caregiver, one-on-one, to explore their goals, concerns, and provide a deeper understanding of the play therapy process and why it works.
